Two Color Fields, One Freeform Opal
Blue and pastel color fields, a natural dark potch band, and the cutting story of this 5.95 ct Lightning Ridge opal.

This 5.95 ct Lightning Ridge opal brings two different color characters into one freeform stone. One field carries cool blue and cyan, with green appearing as the angle changes. The other shows finer green, yellow and orange flecks, with minor red in some views. Between them, a sweeping band of natural dark potch follows the contour of the face.
The drop/leaf outline and asymmetric profile are part of the finished design. Broader flashes and smaller multicolor flecks appear together, but they do not all show equally at every angle. The photographs introduce the different fields; the movement video makes their changing response easier to follow.
The central band is natural potch
The Opal Ledger cut this stone and can identify the central feature from direct handling of the material. The gray band is natural dark potch, continuous with the material retained behind the color-bearing opal. It is not a crack, a glue seam or a separately attached backing.
This is a natural, untreated, solid one-piece opal. The colored areas and potch are parts of the same stone. Seeing both in a face or profile photograph does not make the stone a doublet or triplet. Here, the contrast between those areas is also a distinctive part of its visual character.
The back is natural dark potch and was intentionally left unpolished. The cutter retained that material behind the color-bearing opal rather than removing it to expose a different reverse. Its different texture should be understood as an intentionally retained back, not confused with the face or with an applied backing layer.
Purchase and cutting history
We purchased this opal directly from Down To Earth Opals at the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show and cut it at The Opal Ledger. The supplier link provides context about the business from which it was purchased. It does not imply that the supplier endorses this listing, set its asking price or issued a report for this finished stone.
The Lightning Ridge origin, solid construction and untreated status are recorded with our purchase and cutting history. No laboratory report is included. The printable ledger card is our exact-stone inventory record, carrying the same permanent ID as the website and Etsy listing.
Current photographs and condition
The central band and intentionally unpolished back are natural dark potch, part of the same one-piece stone. The cutter confirms no cracks or chips.
The gallery shows the face from different orientations, including the band, contour and changing color. Reverse, profile, caliper and weight views let buyers compare more than the strongest face-up flash.
The photographs depict the actual stone. There is no generated opal imagery, artificial flash or concealed condition. Hands in some images provide a familiar size reference, while the measurement record supplies the numerical dimensions. Camera, lighting and screen settings can still affect what a viewer sees.
Weight and approximate dimensions
The confirmed listing weight is 5.95 ct. The scale photograph reads 5.950 ct. Approximate dimensions are 20 × 12 × 5 mm, expressed as length × width × thickness and read from the metric caliper photographs, rounded to whole millimeters.
These dimensions are useful for comparing the stone with other loose opals or discussing a possible design. They are not precision setting tolerances. A freeform has an irregular outline and changing profile, so three rounded measurements cannot specify every contact point of a mounting. A jeweler should measure the actual stone before making a setting.
How to compare the two color fields
Start with the blue and cyan area in the movement video, then look for the finer warmer display on the other side of the band. Return to the current still photographs to compare where each field becomes more visible. A change in brightness as the opal turns is part of its directional display, not an instruction to expect every photographed color simultaneously.
The freeform can also be viewed in several orientations. Its outline need not be read in only the direction used by the cover photo. The alternate images let a buyer consider the relationship between the two fields, central potch and broader curve without rotating or modifying the physical gem.
Silent movement video and setting plans
The website uses a selected silent excerpt of IMG_3547, resized for efficient playback. No artificial color enhancement, relighting, cropping, stabilization or speed change was applied to this excerpt. The original recording is preserved separately. The website does not present the short showcase as the full original recording.
This is a loose stone, supplied without jewelry or a setting. For a jewelry project, discuss the actual contour, thickness and retained potch back with the receiving jeweler. The ledger card, current photographs, profile views and video can travel together as the starting documentation for that conversation.
