Caring for opal
Practical handling guidance for finished opals and opal jewelry.
Routine care
Use a soft, damp cloth and mild soap when appropriate. Avoid abrasive cleaners, hard brushes, and impacts against harder jewelry or surfaces. Dry with a clean, soft cloth.
Heat and chemicals
Remove opal jewelry before high-heat work, harsh chemical use, or activities likely to cause impact. Do not use ultrasonic or steam cleaners. Avoid high heat and sudden temperature changes.GIA's opal care reference.
Storage and inspection
Store pieces separately so metal and harder stones do not scratch them. Periodically ask a jeweler to inspect prongs, bezels, and other setting components, especially on frequently worn jewelry.
Care needs can differ with construction and setting. Follow the specific disclosure and marketplace information for the exact stone or finished piece. Avoid soaking doublets and triplets; where construction or treatment is uncertain, seek piece-specific guidance. Read the complete cleaning guide.
